  • Since the popular show was dropped in December 2019, it has become among the most-watched shows on Netflix. The series is adapted from the dark fantasy book series written by a Polish author named Andrzej Sapkowski, and it revolves around a monster hunter named Geralt of Rivia portrayed by the great actor Henry Cavill. Intricately woven plots, interesting and realistic characters, special effects, and the atmosphere of the series are all the components that have made The Witcher popular among viewers.

The Witcher’s second season ended on a high note back in December 2021, and now fans are looking forward to watching Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer’s adventures in the upcoming season 3. Well, here is everything you need to know about the release date, the trailer, the cast, the plot, and more of The Witcher season 3.

The Witcher Season 3 release date, plot, cast & more

The Witcher received its official renewal for a third season in September 2021, just half a year before the second season premiered. This early renewal of the rights was a clear indication that Netflix highly believed in the franchise.

It was only in October 2022 that Netflix confirmed that there will indeed be The Witcher season 3 launching in Summer 2023. There is no specific date on the release date but we can expect new episodes to be released in June, July, or August 2023.

Since S3 is still in the works as of October 2022, the earliest we can visit the Continent again is summer 2023. At least there is something to look forward to in terms of the release window for fans.

Here is the long-awaited trailer for the third season of The Witcher:

It is noteworthy that at the present moment, until October 2022, no trailers for The Witcher season 3 have been published. New episodes’ trailers are often released one or two months before the show’s return, so viewers will have to wait for several more months.

Considering that there is no set release date for The Witcher season 3 other than it being aired in the summer of 2023, the trailer will not likely be shown before the middle of 2023, probably around April or May. Following the confirmation of the premiere date, Netflix will increase production and release of promotional items such as posters and trailers.

A few quick first glances or a few seconds of preview action could potentially come out before the full trailer. However, as filming is in progress currently, there is not even a single video prepared. Continuing their anticipation building, production has yet to give the fans a first proper glimpse of proper season 3 material.

List of Cast Members in The Witcher Season 3

Henry Cavill will be back in season 3 as Geralt of Rivia, the monster hunter and the main character of the Witcher books, games, and now seasons. In addition to Henry, Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan will return as Yennefer, the magician, and Ciri, the young princess.

Other key cast members confirmed to return include:

    • I first met Joey Batey at Comic-Con and was surprised at how friendly and genuine he is, just like his character Jaskier – Geralt’s bard friend.
    • Eamon Farren, likely one of the most remarkable and calculated Nilfgaardian wizards, Cahir.
    • Mimi Ndiweni has portrayed the character of Fringilla Vigo, a sorceress who supports the Nilfgaardian empire.
    • Basil Eidenbenz as Eskel, one of Geralt’s follow witchers

Season 3 will again stay close to the storyline of the prior seasons, and the main characters Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri will be the main focus of the new episodes. Some of the main supporting characters such as Jaskier will also help the main protagonists travel through the Continent.

Some new characters from Andrzej sapkowski's book series are also joining the cast in season 3:

    • Meng’er Zhang as Milva – a human character and an expert in bow and arrows, which in this movie represents a weapon for a huntress.
    • Robbie Amell as Gallatin an elf who is a fighter for freedom.
    • Hugh Skinner as Prince Radovid – a younger counterpart to the Redanian monarch

New actors joining the series will have significant roles in broadening the horizons of The Witcher universe in season 3.

The plot of The Witcher Season 3

As far as the plot is concerned there is no official announcement about the plot for season 3 as of now. New episodes will continue from the story of The Witcher season 2 which left fans astonished with the final episode where Geralt and Ciri met. Over the years, the fans witnessed numerous twists and turns in the series, and finally, Ciri’s origins and powers were unveiled to the characters.

In an interview with the showrunner, Lauren Hissrich, we learned that season 3 will focus on the father and the daughter’s bonding now that Geralt and Ciri are back together. This means that there will be scenes where the character Geralt, who is a more or less mentor figure to Ciri, will have to show her how to become what he is, a witcher, and thus there will be some deep moments of bonding.

As for Yennefer’s affiliation and agendas, they are being questioned as well after the Nilfgaard assault on Sodden Fortress. As the Continent is thrown into all-out war, the audience must prepare for strategic political maneuvering from the sorceress while she battles with her internal wants and needs.

Ciri will also be steadily gaining new powers, which the various factions will want to use for their purposes in the future. For that, they have already showcased the upcoming season as exploring prophecy and destiny, and season 3 would probably look to continue to build upon what has already been set up in terms of myths and legends of the Continent. Given the fact that the series was based on the novels of Andrzej Sapkowski, one may expect that the main idea of Blood of Elves will be based mostly on the novel of the same name.

This is often the case with The Witcher when adopting the multi-timeline narrative structure for its seasons, which means that season 3 will also include multiple storylines set in different periods. Specificities are kept veiled but Geralt of Rivia, Ciri, and Yennefer will be central characters, while additional characters such as Jaskier will serve as characters that enhance drama and adventurous aspects.

Since Lauren Hissrich has planned seven seasons to encompass Geralt’s journey expect some fresh character developments and some big plot development that sets up The Witcher’s story for future seasons.

The Witcher Season 4 and Beyond: What is planned for the future?

While season 3 is still awaited, Netflix is positive about the continuation of The Witcher series. Creator Lauren Hissrich mentioned that she wants to adapt all the Witcher books during the show’s seven seasons plan.

Netflix, on the other hand, has appeared to be all in by talking about future ‘seasons of The Witcher’ in renewal statements. Although the official renewal for the show has not been given yet, The Witcher season 4 seems inevitable.

Seven books in the main Witcher Saga by Andrzej Sapkowski deal chiefly with Geralt’s narrative. Given that each season seems to pack a year’s worth of episodes containing elements from around one book’s worth of material given the pacing, the later seasons have no shortage of plotlines to adapt from in the first place.

    What Drought Monster?

The Witcher has been on the break since season 2 beginning almost two years ago and is now gearing up to start filming season 3 to be released in summer, 2023. Moreover, if seasons are planned and enacted yearly, then fans may have less wait for future seasons as well.

Since the universe of the Continent and its mythology is filled with so many incredible quests yet to be portrayed across the decades of the Witcher’s life, Geralt of Rivia has a lot of monsters to slay in his story. Indeed the narrative that unfolds in the The Witcher book and game universe is vast to the largest degree.

This show will surely continue to get churned out on Netflix just as long as the fans continue to tune in. And given that the Continent is populated by thick-skinned characters, politics, and magical perils, it seems that The Witcher is guaranteed to draw its viewers into many more great adventures in the future.
