A Troubled History

Spectrum was established in 2016 after Charter Communications Company bought Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks. This merger birthed one of the most extensive telecoms in the united states with customers touch over 26 million states across 41. However, the switch from the old order of things was anything but a graceful process. Almost at once, customers began to raise hell over the issue of bad service delivery, high tariffs, and even loss of internet connection.

Spectrum agreed to pay $18 million in 2019 so as to resolve the New York Attorney General’s legal action related to claims of false and misleading representations regarding internet speeds the company was fully aware it could not provide. This settlement made it compulsory for Spectrum to provide $62.5 million refund to consumers and offer improved and speedy internet services. However, customers in provinces within the country still complain of regular disconnections and slow internet speeds.

The Pandemic Internet Struggle

In early 2020 when the coronavirus outbreak took place, the Internet was more useful than it had ever been. Thanks to WFH orders and distance learning, millions of Americans depended on stable gigabit Internet connections. This was evident in the situation of Spectrum customers where internet strain presented issues that were simmering in the background.

People voiced their frustrations regarding Spectrum Internet Plan Internet outages, some users complained about the complete loss of services for days. Some people faced demeened internet speeds, where the only thing one can do is to check emails. This unveiled other structural and resource problems in Spectrum’s networks to a greater level.

But, people continue to express their internet-related anger and concerns online even when other aspects of their lives are returning to normal – which means that those issues are not trivial.

Customers of Spectrum through California up to Maine have each described experiencing normal internet outages lasting between a couple of hours and up to multiple days in 2022. It is notable that some regions with a high penetration of Spectrum customers indicate a high average daily increase in cases, which may be due to overloading of local networks.

Furthermore, customers still complain to have internet speeds way below their subscription package offer. This is because consumers feel that they have been misled by Spectrum, which undermines the confidence people have in the Spectrum brand. When joined with frequent reliability problems many of the users have the impression that they are paying for an expensive and substandard service.

Behind the problems appear both a matter of capacity and inadequate infrastructure. As more consumers cancel cable service and turn to streaming all content online, the Internet companies have more on their plates than ever before. However, network equipment in some places remains obsolete and cannot accommodate higher traffic volumes. Replacing a couple of key pieces may take years and much workforce, and both are scarce in the current supply chain crisis.

Proposed Mergers Add Uncertainty

Speculations around the potential mergers started in November 2021 when Charter Communications, Spectrum’s parent company considered acquiring either Comcast or DIRECTV. Further acquisitions, on the other hand, may herald a significant overhaul in the telecom sector but will not help to address Spectrum’s current issues with customer relations.

Given Charter Communications’ previous run ins over its abilities to meet merger requirements set earlier, any new proposed merger combinations will not go unnoticed. Unless there are concretizations of subsequent Charter mergers, the extension of other huge media players into the Spectrum family only generates questions and issues.

What Comes Next?

As of now, Spectrum has not demonstrated the capacity or desire to provide the quality and dependable high-speed internet to every client. Chasing the waves of pandemic work-from-home and remote education, internet became not just the luxury but part of the necessity.

Spectrum continues saying that they are working towards the topmost goal of offering outstanding customer service. However, mergers that are proposed and service failure that is repeatedly experienced erode customer and regulator confidence. For this reason, it is prudent to expect that customers should not anticipate a much better performance until Spectrum has addressed its internal capacity and infrastructure issues.

For now, Spectrum subscribers have to settle for shaky connection quality and occasional disconnection. One of which is filing a complaint for remunerated service not received such as internet speeds. Likewise, comparing other providers might provide you with more reliability if the available options are within your geographical area. One thing is clear however – with broadband internet now firmly adopted as a requirement for work and life, the need for consistency and clarity has never been greater.
