Frontier Communications has fiber-optic internet service, Frontier FiOS, available in some regions in the United States of America. As of 2023,
Frontier Fiber is available in limited parts of the following states
California
Frontier FiOS fiber internet service provider is currently offered in some areas of Southern California, including parts of Los Angeles, Long Beach, Irvine, Riverside, and San Bernardino. This is a scarce resource and it is only available in some areas such as neighborhoods and districts.
Texas
At the moment, Frontier FiOS fiber is only available in some parts of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area in Texas, comprising Dallas, Fort Worth, Denton, and McKinney. It is fragmented and is mostly associated with particular districts and complexes.
Florida
However, Frontier provides FiOS fiber internet to some parts of Central Florida including Lakeland, Winter Haven, parts of Lake Wales, Davenport, and Poinciana. Like other states, availability remains limited to some subdivisions and specific pockets within such areas.
Indiana
Frontier FiOS fiber broadband is available in many areas of Elkhart, Goshen, Nappanee, and LaGrange in Northern Indiana to many neighborhoods and communities. However, availability is very limited even in those cities.
Oregon
Currently, Frontier’s fiber network reaches some areas in Beaverton, Gresham, McMinnville, Newberg, Oregon City, Portland, Salem, Tigard, and Woodburn Oregon. Fiber coverage stands at very limited to fairly widespread across those cities.
Washington
In Washington, Frontier FiOS fiber is available in some parts of Tacoma, Lakewood, Puyallup, Graham, and Bonney Lake – all to the east of Tacoma and Olympia. Its availability is not constant since it depends on the specific neighborhood in which it is located.
West Virginia
Frontier provides some FiOS fiber availability in parts of Charles Town, Martinsburg, Bridgeport, Clarksburg, and Morgantown in northern and north-central West Virginia. Fiber availability remains scattered and restricted in these regions as well.
Connecticut
Frontier FiOS fiber is available in some areas of southern and central Connecticut with limited and patchy coverage in New Haven, Waterbury, Bristol, Southington, Wallingford, and some areas of Hartford County.
Other States
Apart from those states, Frontier FiOS does not offer fiber internet to any other state at the moment. The firm has divested many of its fiber assets and networks in the last few years in states such as Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana.
Nevertheless, Frontier does offer fiber internet service to some business addresses outside the states mentioned above to a very limited extent. However, fiber availability for residential service is restricted to the areas mentioned earlier.
What are the reasons for Frontier Fiber not to be available in more locations?
There are a few key reasons why Frontier's fiber-optic internet service has such limited availability, even within the states where some coverage exists.
1. Limited fiber usage has been a history in the past
However unlike competitors such as Verizon, Frontier for most of its history did not invest a great deal in the deployment of fiber. To add on, many of the assets it did have were either underutilized or were disposed of instead of being diversified. Consequently, its fiber networks are limited to small footprints.
2. Financial Difficulties
Currently, there is low confidence among investors in Frontier mainly because of continuous operating losses, high debt levels, and a diminishing number of subscribers. This weak financial status hinders Frontier’s ability to secure financing and invest in fiber expansion at a massive scale.
3. Shift in Corporate Strategy
Frontier filed for bankruptcy in 2020 and 2021, and it came out of it with new leadership. The new leadership came up with a new corporate strategy that focused on bolstering Frontier’s existing copper infrastructure instead of aggressive fiber deployments. Thus, with a minuscule fiber base, little fiber expansion is taking place.
It is difficult to say that Frontier will not increase fiber service offerings more in the future, but at the moment, there is no indication that they will have more fiber services. Unfortunately, for most of the people looking to get fiber from Frontier, it is best not to expect it unless your area already has FiOS deployment.
The Bottom Line
Frontier FiOS fiber internet service delivery is very limited and restricted to some areas of parts of nine states only. It is unlikely that Frontier will expand beyond the current locations due to its past performance, poor financial health, and its current corporate model. Sadly for most people who want faster and more reliable fiber broadband from Frontier, the reality is that it will probably never come to your area. High-speed fiber connection addition or preservation should only be expected by residents in regions where Frontier FiOS fiber service is currently available.
